The North Oakville Badminton Club, a recreational league that started last year, hosted a tournament last week with 20 teams competing.

The finals were held on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Oodenawi Public School, where the title was claimed by team Feather Force. "We partner with local schools to rent their gyms, transforming them into lively arenas where people of all ages and skill levels can come together, stay active, and foster lasting connections," says the club.

"Whether you're a seasoned player or a curious beginner, our club offers a welcoming environment where everyone can experience the joy and benefits of badminton."

For co-founders Nasir Shaikh and Tarique Khan, this club began as a way to stay active and get out in the community. Initially, Shaikh wanted to start a golfing group, but Khan insisted he try badminton.

After trying it and realizing how much fun it was, Khan and Shaikh decided to spread the word throughout their neighbourhood. A community that originally started with a goal of around 25 members quickly grew to over 300.

Khan and Shaikh say it's important for many of their members, especially those who are new to Canada, to be part of this community as it not only gives them motivation to be active, but also creates a sense of belonging and community. The league typically plays about three to five times per week.

Friday's tournament had 80 players participating across 20 teams. The top three teams from the tournament and their players are:

  1. Feather Force - Neha, Tausif, Rakibul, and Cyrus
  2. Smash Squad - Wasi, Harry, Nasir, and Arun
  3. North Oak Challengers - Vipul, Ivy, Anil, and Balaji

Players hosted an after-party dinner at L’ Afghan Grill, which featured multiple courses of food and good times among friends.
