Musikay Season Finale: chant des oiseaux

Musikay closes its 2013-2014 season with a celebration of spring. Over the centuries many composers have created imaginative musical works for the best season of all. For this spring we chose one of the most evocative spring inspired music as the centre piece for this programme: Clement Janequin’s chant des oiseaux: song of the birds.

Le chant des oiseaux is an explosion of joy and light. The music sings of rebirth and new life. Most of all the piece is an imaginative imitation of many bird species singing their beautiful spring songs.

Singers make sounds rather than words—in this chanson. Janequin writes many passages in which the singers do not so much sing as make bird-calls to one another! You will hear “huit huit huit huit,” “fi ti fi ti frr,” “oyti oyti trr,” “turri turri qrr” and, in dense imitation in the final section, “coqu coqu coqu.

To complement Janequin’s inventive music you will enjoy the expressive Salva nos and Missa brevis by Palestrina; two works that bring the sound of heaven to earth.

To make this program unique we are working on some surprises to enhance your Musikay experience.

Performances will take place on Saturday, April 26, 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s United Church 262 Randall Street (downtown Oakville), and Sunday, April 27, 3:30 p.m. at Mary Mother of God Church 2745 North Ridge Trail (north Oakville)
