For several years, the Oakville Museum has hosted an exhibition around Remembrance Day entitled Shadows of War: Not So Long Ago in the 20th Century. The exhibit was first created in 1999, right at the turn of the 21st century, when the Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate asked the citizens of Oakville to donate digital reproductions of their war photographs, artifacts and their stories for the purpose of the exhibit.
Many war veterans shared their images and memories, while other community members contributed images that honoured their family or friends, some of whom had died in the wars. Every November, a different version of the exhibit is displayed at the Oakville Museum, each paying homage to Oakville’s war veterans and community members who have lived under the shadows of war.
This year’s display commemorates Canadian war efforts through military uniforms representing the three military divisions, each paired with a text panel focusing on the participation of Oakville residents. The small display sits in the Museum lobby and we hope that it will help visitors remember those who served and continue to serve in times of war, military conflict and peace.
The uniforms will be on display until November 15, 2013, and can be viewed from Tuesday through to Sunday, 1:00 t0 4:30 PM.
