A Celebration of Student Filmmaking: 13th Annual Eddies Awards

The Eddies, the Halton Student Film Festival, celebrates student success in filmmaking by recognizing technical and creative achievements and is open to all elementary and secondary students. Previous Eddies award winners have graduated and gone on to achieve success in the film industry, with some capturing prestigious awards for their work.

This year the event is highlighted by an impressive list of professionals from the television and movie industry who will judge the submissions.

• Adam Jewett - Production Manager for Game of Thrones, Twilight Breaking Dawn and Battle Los Angeles.

• Adele Ng - Senior Lighter on Spiderman 2, Hotel Transylvania, Happy Feet 2 and Invictus.

• Paul Ames - Production Designer for Kids in the Hall, Rick Mercer Reports, SFX for Dr. Who in England as well as a number of feature films in both Canada and England.

• Janet Muise – Librarian, CBC Image Research Library.

• Ana Yavari - Editor on The Tudors, The Borgias and the new Showtime series Penny Dreadful.

• Hana Kukal - Has worked on several classically animated feature films such as Ferngully, the Last Rainforest, the Canadian production The Nutcracker Prince and the Adam Sandler movie Eight Crazy Nights.

• Marc Beurteaux - Has animated on TV shows such as Glen Martin DDS, Celebrity Deathmatch, Rick and Steve, Jojo's Circus, Little People and A Miser Brothers Christmas. Presently he is the conceptual designer for the Nick Jr. series Julius Jr.

The deadline for entries is 4 p.m. on May 5. Students can go to the Eddies website to enter their movies and get more information. There’s still time to enter and get your work seen by the pros!

Many students participate each year from various subject areas making this a true display of how technology can be integrated in all academic and technical subjects. "Eddies" are given out in various categories during the awards gala.

The categories are wide ranging, from comedy and public service announcements to music videos and animation. The Eddies also award a Palme D’Eddy – representing Best in Show winners – to both elementary and secondary students.

The 13th annual Eddies Gala Awards evening – a popular festival celebrating student filmmaking – will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (440 Locust St., Burlington). The doors open at 6 p.m. and the awards celebration begins at 7 p.m., followed by screenings of this year's winners.
