On Sunday, October 22, Sports Oakville returned to Town Hall to host the 14th annual Sports Oakville Awards ceremony to celebrate and acknowledge the hard workers in each sports club on and off the field.
The award ceremony is to highlight the people in the Oakville sports community who showen dedication, perseverance, their achievements and more of not only the athletes, but the coaches, volunteers, and teams.
"The real testament to Oakville’s passion for sport and recreation, however, is the vast range of organized activities that Oakville’s sport community offers—such as gymnastics, baseball, cricket, swimming, soccer, speed skating, hockey, track and field, and volleyball—to name a few!” said Gary Hudson, President of Sport Oakville.
"For the most part, these local sports groups are, and continue to be, volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organizations which provide opportunities for participants, young and old, of varying abilities, to learn and develop skills, sportsmanship, and good citizenship, and to make new friendships—all which are part of maintaining a healthy active life."
At this year's award ceremony, Sports Oakville welcomed three new clubs into its organization. Agalateya Sports Club, MusFit, and the Oakville Titans Football Club. Mayor Rob Burton and Ward 6 Town and Regional Councillor Tom Adams were in attendance at the award ceremony as well.
Chris Mei, who returns this year as the master of ceremonies, brought an electric atmosphere to the awards ceremony that filled the room with laughter as he spoke of the accomplishments of the athletes, volunteers and coaches who received an award.
"I feel excited and happy that I'm acknowledged about it (her achievements) and I was very happy that I got to accomplish those and that the Town of Oakville knows that too (of her achievements)," says 15-year-old Gabrielle Black, who received an athlete award at the ceremony.
"Sport Oakville committed itself to create the Sports Recognition Awards that would recognize and celebrate the excellence, perseverance and dedication of our athletes, teams, coaches, and volunteers in the area of sport development, performance, and contribution to this community," sid Hudson.
