This is Oakville's coronavirus update for Saturday, May 4, 2024. The number of new, daily cases in Oakville have gone up more than 50 per cent in the last week, though with a total still at manageable levels.

Halton Regional Health has greatly updated its data for local vaccinations, reporting that just 10 per cent of adults in the region are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccinations. A total of 60 per cent have had the base two doses and one (or more) booster shots since 2021.

New daily cases in Oakville have been slowly declining in the last two months, but this week saw the infectivity rates go from an average fo 2.9 cases per day to 4.6 cases - more than a 50 per cent jump.

Halton region is now averaging about 31 new cases per week, notably more than the 2-3 per day being reported for most of April. There is some good news: the number of local outbreaks has decreased to three, down by one from last week.

Hospitalizations are down by two patients, but the number of PCR tests coming back positive has increased to nearly 8.3% - a high for 2024. Notably, that number doesn't include cases from rapid tests, which are no longer tracked.

Nationwide, Canada reports their total number of active cases and hospitalizations have gone up slightly in the last seven days. Nationwide, only five deaths were reported. U.S. hospitalizations are again down significantly this week.

The global confirmed count of cases surpassed 775 million in mid-April, counting worldwide since the start of the pandemic. 7 million people worldwide have died due to COVID-19, though the real count of unofficial deaths is millions higher.

**Vaccine booking: All doses and booster doses are now available for anyone in Halton age 5 and up. First doses are available for those six months and older.

While Halton's vaccine clinics are now closed, most pharmacies and health care centres are offering all numbered doses and boosters to patients.
